Have you been thinking about seeing a counsellor for a while but something's been holding you back and you're not sure what?
It's a difficult decision, especially when sometimes you feel low and miserable, and other days you feel great. When you're feeling flat and have that 'I think I've lost my mojo' feeling it seems like a straightforward decision - yes, I must find someone independent to talk to, and you may even take action towards that end. And then the next day you feel okay, things are not quite so bad and you're sure you can manage on your own, so you decide to put off making that call once again.
However, if you're having constant ups and downs or dealing with issues that appear not to be resolving then it definitely makes sense to see a counsellor. A counselling session allows you the time and space, just for you, to reflect on what is happening and to clearly identify some strategies to deal with whatever is holding you back.
The 'I can handle it' attitude can be one of the biggest barriers to seeing a counsellor. Many of us hesitate when it comes to asking for help. We all like to think we can deal with everything on our own and for many of us, it can be challenging to ask for assistance. And yet, just by asking and opening up to another person we are often initiating the change we seek.
Sometimes we fear the problem will become more real when we discuss it with someone else. But it's not until you identify and address the issue that it can it be resolved.
People often ask me, 'do you think I need counselling?' It's a difficult question for me to answer because ultimately, it's up to you. It must be a choice you make. A counselling session offers you the opportunity to talk to someone independent of your situation. However, I always stress that it's a two-way relationship, with the counsellor offering you the support and guidance to help you to find the necessary solutions to the situation.
I always think it's helpful when deciding whether to see a counsellor to understand the benefits of counselling. I've listed just a few below:
